Discover Bad Segeberg by Hire Car
In the German state of Schleswig-Holstein you will find the small town of Bad Segeberg. As a venue for the Karl May Festival, it has also become known far beyond the borders of Germany.
For this very reason, this town is an absolute must for Winnetou and Old Shatterhand fans at the time of the festival.
Sights in Bad Segeberg
However, Bad Segeberg has plenty of sights to offer besides the festival. Thus, it is best to explore the numerous sights with a hire car.
The Marienkirche should be one of the first places to go in this case. Dating back to the 12th century, the brick basilica’s triumphal cross and bronze fountain (baptismal font) showcase the unique skills of artists of the time.
Furthermore, the church is the annual venue for the famous Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, which takes place in several towns in the state during the summer months.
Leisure activities in Bad Segebergs
In the centre of Bad Segeberg stands the unmissable Kalkberg. The mountain can be climbed on paved hiking trails and on its summit a beautiful view of Bad Segeberg and the surrounding Schleswig-Holstein hills opens up.
A visit to the Kalkberg Cave is also highly recommended. It serves as winter accommodation for the bat species that live here and is home to, among other things, the Segeberger cave beetle, which is only native to this area.
Particularly asthmatics should visit this cave, as there is almost 100% humidity here. In connection with the bats, Noctalis – the world of bats – also provides a successful diversion and prepares an afternoon worth knowing for young and old.
The old town hall from the Biedermeier period presents itself in its consummate old beauty and is always worth a visit. The listed water tower is another highlight of the city. Today it serves as a private residence and can therefore unfortunately no longer be visited from the inside.
